Star Trek Celebrates Forty-Six Years

September 8, 2012 marks the forty-sixth anniversary of the premiere of Star Trek: The Original Series. Aside from BBC America showing four episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation from 4 pm-8 pm--which is a regular part of their Saturday afternoon programming--the only noticeable celebration of the event can be found on the Google homepage. The Google logo is designed to look like the bridge of the original USS Enterprise (NCC-1701). The logo is actually an interactive Google Doodle similar to the one available throughout the London Olympics. The Doodle is only four short scenes, and it plays out a very brief version of Star Trek season 1 episode 19 “Arena” in which the Enterprise is captured by the Metrons and Captain Kirk is forced to fight for his life against a Gorn. The episode’s most recent claim to fame was when the Mythbusters--in episode 136 “Mini Myth Mayhem”--took aim at Kirk’s method of victory over the Gorn. The Build Team found that Kirk’s strategy of using homemade gunpowder to propel diamonds at his opponent out of a cannon made using a plant resembling bamboo reinforced with rope would not have worked. I know; we were all shocked.

Perhaps coincidentally, but more likely by design, the title of J. J. Abrams’s second Star Trek film was leaked last night. It has been confirmed by multiple sources that the sophomore outing will be titled Star Trek Into Darkness and will be released May 17th, 2013.

If you want to relive the original Star Trek, The Next Generation or any of the spin-offs (Deep Space Nine, Voyager or Enterprise), they are all available on Netflix Instant. Honestly, they’re all great. Unfortunately, none of the movies is available for streaming.
